Dr Tulsi Das Library, PGI Chandiagrh
The Dr Tulsi das Library plays a significant role to serve the faculty members, residents, research fellows, staff and students. It serves readers with its rich collection of books, current journals and archives of journals, thesis and various e-resources. Dr. Tulsi Das Library supports the research of nursing staff and students, medical experts and researchers at PGIMER, Chandigarh with the combination of digitization, internet access and other contemporary information sources.
The Institute Library, PGIMER Chandigarh initially started in R.N. Dogra Block on the 6th floor of Research Block ‘B. It moved to its present premises on 29th November 1994 and was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sh. B. Shankaranand. The Library got its name after Dr. Tulsi Das, world renowned ophthalmologist, first director of PGIMER and one of the founders of the institute. Since then the library is expanding in both magnitude as well as substance, and constantly striving to fulfill its mission of convenient access to updated information in both print and digital formats to academic fraternity of PGIMER to meet their teaching, training, research and patient care needs.
- Library remains open round the clock throughout the year except for designated library holidays. These library holidays are Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Holi, Diwali, Sri Guru Nanak Devji’s Birthday and Christmas
- The library remains closed from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on the occasion of Janamashtmi and Dussehra
- The reading room is open 24 hours except on designated library holidays when the library is closed.
Dr Tulsi Das Library grants the following types of membership:
A. Regular members: All the existing staff of PGI who are either regular staff or residents/students will be eligible to be regular members. These members can access all the facilities of the library.
B. Special members: The retired academicians and scientists of PGIMER, Chandigarh can be enrolled as special members after payment of a refundable security deposit of Rs 2500/- (the membership will be granted for a period of three years and can be extended on yearly basis thereafter on request). These members can have access to permissible e-resources of the library (certain online resources may not be accessible as license agreements do not permit the same) as well as books/journals and can use the reading/discussion rooms of the library for bonafide library activities only.
C. Reading-only members: They will have access to only the reading rooms of the library. This membership is only for use of reading rooms of Dr Tulsi Das Library. This will be granted for a limited period after payment of non-refundable membership fees as mentioned below:
- One Month: Dependents of PGIMER Staff Members, contractual PGI staff, ex-Residents/Students of PGI, fellows engaged in PGI research projects: Membership fee Rs 500/- (Non refundable).
- Three Months: Dependents of PGIMER Staff Members, contractual PGI staff, ex-Residents/Students of PGI, fellows engaged in PGI research projects: Membership fee Rs 1200/- (Non-refundable).
- One Month for others: Membership fee Rs 800/- (Non-refundable).
- Three Months for others: Membership fee Rs 2500/- (Non-refundable).
During months of April, May, November and December: The reading only membership will be restricted in view of ongoing examination.
- All library rules are to have strictly adhered to without any further discussion.
- Silence to be maintained.
- No entry without a library card.
- Permission holders are allowed to use library premises from 9:30 AM till 8:00 PM. After 8:00 PM the library facilities can be used only by the regular members.
- Make an entry (mention Library Card No.) in the register while coming and going out of the library.
- Follow all COVID Norms:
- Wear mask properly.
- Sanitize hands before entering the library.
- Don’t keep used masks on tables/carrels.
- No personal bags/laptop bags allowed beyond the entrance of the library.
- Keep your all personal belongings at the property counter.
- Don’t keep your valuable items in bags kept at the property counter; the library administration is not responsible for any kind of loss/misuse.
- Don’t leave your chargers (Phone/Laptop), personal books, and other reading material on tables when you leave the library.
- Keep your mobile phone on silent mode while sitting in the library.
- Use discussion area (top floor outside reading area) to avoid disturbance to the users of library.
- No one is allowed to sit on the stairs inside as well as outside of the library.
- Eatables and Beverages are not allowed in the library premises.
- Make use of dustbins.
